I don't mean you, but if he committed this act of destruction for that reason - prioritizing art over people - is he not doing the same thing by destroying the statues in response?

I'm not sure which actions in the West you're referring to, but I do completely disagree with things like changing American state southern flags, removing statues and the like. But of course, if you say that, you must be a neo-nazi skinhead.
