The latter is more consistent with Occam's Razor, but perhaps there is something of the former as well.

I mean, if you were able to ignore the opinions of idiots and ideologues without consequence, wouldn't you feel justified in doing so?

Or do you feel bound by the opinions of idiots and ideologues, on the democratic principle that they, together with those they hold influence over, are the majority?
