Just like the plain truth and facts about the earth not being flat, there are truths and facts that exist that those like your niece are far away from. Whether it is by distance in miles or distance in their lack of knowledge, despite their own subconscious admission of their short coming they will still hold dear to their beliefs. Not because they believe they are correct, or belief in their data, which they champion their beliefs on, but it comes down to them clinging to their distrust.
