When the U.S. was way more religious from the founding to the late 1800's the age of consent ranged from 7 to 12. No state had it higher than 12.
Also there doesn't seem to be a correlation between religion and aoc. The most religious state in the U.S. Alabama, has it's aoc as 16. The least religious state in the U.S. has it's aoc at 16 as well. In 1920 Georgia had the lowest at 14. In 1871 Delaware actually lowered its aoc from 10 to 7. In return the penalty for having sex before someone was at least 7 was death. The aoc raising in the late 1880's was not driven by Christian fundamentalists. It was driven by first wave feminism. Georgia being in the strong Christian south East was the last to raise it's aoc from 14 to 16 in 1996 under pressure from the federal government. Several states still have no restriction on the marriage age so you can legally marry and have sex with them at any age as long as you are married. Looking at the world map and a map of religiosity by country. There once again seems to be zero correlation between how religious a country is and it's aoc. Anyone claiming Christianity is behind the rise will have a hard time explaining how the aoc was lower, far lower, when puritanism ran supreme. |
