short term vs. long term

I see the distinction being between short term and long term; a difference between self-centered pleasure and other-centered commitment.

Of course, if two parties are involved both may want only short term pleasure, with or without concern for the other - and that is rightly their choice.

But there are sometimes mismatches, where one side is only interested in short term pleasure and the other side thinks they are getting something more. This is especially an issue if deception is involved, but even an unintentional mismatch can be devastating to one party. In fact, even an unconscious mismatch can be devastating to one party.

Which is probably why I lean toward the side of preferring something a little more long-term.

People deserve to know that they are valued, and that they are not just being used as a disposable tool.
