1930's radio: War of the Worlds anniversary..

My mom remembered to me, her dad grabbing his shotgun, and going out with the other fathers to defend against the approaching aliens of the tri-state area. The family was terrified. Event was later presented as a "mere" joke.

This radio presentation was either funny or abusive. Nearly a century later, I see both pros and cons for both arguments.

You fucked with people back then though, and while it wasn't real, you scared the F out of people, snickering at how they so easily believed their end was near.

That looks rather sadistic today.

I dunno what I believe about back then, but current times should present a more harsh consequence for anything similar which presents itself in such worrisome times.
