I would say that if you aren't sure what to do right now, going to ground is probably your best option.

That said, I do think things are moving in our favor. It wasn't that long ago that "gay" became an unequivocal slur that could be applied to anyone or anything, no longer strictly tied to homosexuality. I think the strategy you mentioned is correct, but it takes time.

Keep in mind that there are a LOT of people in their twenties and thirties now who saw firsthand what things were like when they were children, who KNOW for a fact that the official narrative is utter nonsense.

Of course that is not great comfort when we are still dealing with persecution, but precisely because we WERE so affected we might be the least likely to recognize how quickly things are changing, especially among young people.
