First off, it doesn't matter what qtns claims now. He was very much serious at the time and defended his position throughout that thread. If he had been joking, he would've let it drop or corrected for it when he was criticized. The best case scenario you can take away from that thread is that he was just maintaining his "joke" to fuck with me, but even if that were the case (and I don't think it is), then what of all the people who come here for the first time and sees that? This is why I said that even if he was carrying on a sarcastic joke to "fuck" with you, I still don't approve of what he said for the reason you mentioned above. And you know I have long argued that because this is a public board, what we say, and how we say it, very much does matter because of the many lurkers and newbies who peruse this board. So I'm not disagreeing with you here. Nevertheless, I do trust qtns2di4 to be honest with me about whether he was fully serious or not if I request it. How do you think that's going to impact your activism when people here are talking about murdering people and no one calls them on it? As I said, I agree, and you can see I did call him on it now that you brought my attention to it. Every political camp has individuals who espouse extreme methods, and I will oppose those in my own camp as much as I do those from other camps. And the thing is, qtns has been consistently spewing this kind of crap for a long time now, and he has gotten progressively more arrogant and offensive about it. He now makes jd420 look like a political moderate. Since I just recently returned from a rather lengthy hiatus, I'm not in the know about what qtns' posting was like during my absence. To be honest, I think it's possible that your past problems with him may have caused you to read into what he says much too much, as I have been friends with him a long time and he has never espoused support for murder as the solution to any problem. But I'm not going to deny out of hand what you say out of hand, and I can certainly be persuaded with good evidence. Right, but that was not the original version of that message, which was much more offensive. He said something to the effect of "I wish all the Baby Boomers would drop dead." I still don't think he meant it literally, but I will confess it wasn't a cool thing to say in the course of venting his frustration. And Dante, who would (rightly) have raked me over the coals if I had said it, said nothing. Granted, it's not on the order of the offense that qtns committed; Neut's comment was vague and he did not call for any actions, but still, wishing an entire generation would drop dead is still pretty fucked up. I agree it was in bad taste, and he could have found a better way to verbally vent his frustrations. Sometimes when people get angry, they don't think before they say something. And again, consider what nons who might be reading this board would think and how they would react to it. Yet no one but Jasmine called him on it, and that was only after Neut made the point again. I always consider what the Nons and even lurking fellow MAPs may say when they read the board. I think the majority of the board does too. However, not everyone does, I must confess, and some of us simply do not always manage their anger and frustration as well as others. I think everyone who ignored what Neut said gave him the benefit of the doubt for not meaning it, but I do agree someone should have said something, and he should have been given the chance to apologize for the way he put it if he was so inclined after calming down and thinking about it for a bit. I can tell you, though, that the administration does not advocate any type of illegal activity, and that includes murder or any type of extreme methods that entail going outside of the system to achieve change.
But I have started reading it as much as I can since I've returned, and I have read it a lot during previous times when you have said it was a hotbed of immoral comments and stances. I do think that, like some of the others we've mentioned, your anger and frustration has caused you to read into things too much, or to make overly negative interpretations of certain statements you have read. I agree that things do get said here that should not be said, at least not in the way they're articulated, but I do not agree that the majority of people here are like that. This is not meant to detract from some of the wrongful things said on this board, but I will point out this: Many in the status quo you support are gleeful cheerleaders of every imperialist war that the U.S. fights, with many not caring about the carnage wreaked on innocents over there because those innocents do not happen to be American citizens. And I do think this is relevant to the point at hand, since I question many pro-status quo individuals who may believe they are in a position to question the immoral positions of others. Does this mean that any of us are "justified" in following their lead? Of course not, and I would never attempt to argue that is the case. I am simply saying that many who like to pontificate upon the moral failings of others are hardly in a position to do it without looking like hypocrites. |
