I could indeed have done exactly as you said, and perhaps I should have. I was a bit worried, however, about turning ANY aspect of the conversation towards her daughter. There were a lot of people in the reception area, and I didn't want to get anyone thinking the wrong thing. However, you're right in that I probably was a bit overly paranoid. It would have been nice to have at least exchanged a few words with her daughter, as she seemed wonderful to talk to. I did chat with her mother for a bit, but not about her daughter, and her mother never led the convo in that direction. I would have liked to have found out her daughter's exact age, but I would have had no reason to ask what school she attended. That may have come off as "creepy," as in all honesty, I had no reason to know that info.
