The 'war on pedophilia' is due to a high % of society that hates pedophiles. Everyone (just about) knows someone who smokes pot, so the war on drugs doesn't have much support. The prohibition was obviously a bad idea, evidenced by the 21st Amendment. So if everyone knew someone who was a pedophile, then the war on pedophilia wouldn't have much support. I could live with a society that was accepting/tolerant of pedophiles, even if child/adult sex was still illegal. And people would be willing to listen and discuss the issues. There's no equivalent of overdosing or cancer with cases of child/adult sex, so they're not completely interchangable anyhow.

"It is also out of fear of sparking outright terrorism worldwide if we cut off their only means of export."
I have to disagree with this. Many middle-eastern countries (including Iraq) are afraid that the US might invade them in order to get free(ish) oil. Al-qaeda hates the US in part because we support the Saudi Arabian government (which they want to overthrow) in order for us to get discounts on oil. I think terrorism against the US will decrease if we cut off our reliance on oil. Also, oil money goes to the super-rich elite who can live many lifetimes off their fortunes, and would have no reason to engage in terrorism (nor would they likely have followers dedicated enough to sacrifice themselves for it.)
