That is not to say that acceptance will never occur elsewhere. European, asian and latin cultures are more lenient and, dare I say, more progressive in dealing with many issues regarding sex and sexualty. The Americans and British have dominated the world culturally for probably 80 years. The Americans have a flair and genious for business, but when they try social engineering projects we fail miserably. Prohibition, the War on Proverty, and the current project in Iraq are examples of good intentions gone badly awry. I hope the effort in Iraq does not end with civil war and a regional conflict.
But lets get off the lofty historical pedastal and on to a more personal perspective. If the conflict over our acceptance can be measured in stages, then are we over the worst of it, or are we only at the end of the beginning. I believe we are only at the end of the beginning of this effort of acceptance. It will, if successful, take generations or at the very least decades, to change society's views towards us. However, there are small and individual efforts that can be taken to point out that discrimination is generally illegal, especially hiring discrimination. I believe that ending job discrimination is a first step towards ending discrimination generally.
Thanks
