That the very laws made to protect the kids are more than likely making things worse.

I am doubtful of the case made that repressive laws turn people into psychopaths - while perhaps rarely true, I tend to think that a psychopath is a psychopath is a psychopath, and will be so regardless of the law. However, it is certainly true that in cases of consensual adult-child sex where harm has occurred, it is far more likely to have been caused by society's reaction to it than by the sexual contact itself.

However, your comment reminds me of another point that should be made. Prior to the movement for equal rights for women, it was a truism that women needed to be protected because (1) they were childlike and incapable of making good choices for themselves and (2) normal women had no sexual desires, and needed to be protected from predatory men.

Of course, we now consider both those statements to be false, but they were believed for many years, even by many women - such is the power of suggestion.

I would also point out that women, slaves, and native Americans were all accorded inferior status in order to protect them, because they were considered childlike and incapable of making good choices for themselves. At least, that was the official reason given at the time.

Considering how effective that protection was, one has to ask how anyone could inflict it on children.
