While I don't aknowledge my desire publicly, I do return their friendliness in kind. The girls are just having fun, and public recognition that this is a good thing seems to be OK.
Most parental units whose daughters are behaving this way are more likely to be chagrinned themself; while not necessarily expecting it from others.
I also find in a communal situation, that balancing public aknowledgement and respecting some degree of privacy are relatively easy if I consider the girl's feelings alone. Sure, some parents are wierdos. But if I'm friendly but unobtrusive towards the girl, then that avoids the whole "leering" thing.
Of course the first step to avoiding the flinching, is to not feel guilty for running the subroutine that they installed.
Good luck.
