State level, and the multilinguality

State level, some states have recognised languages: French in Louisiana and Spanish in New Mexico, along with English in both of them and in more, of course, and I remember that one state, but I forgot which, actually proclaimed "American" as its language...

yet those who do not speak the language the constitution was written in are largely held back and with suspicion.

True.

Not unusual - that happens in probably every country.

Sad that it happens anywhere in the world, but sadder yet in a country that prides itself on its supposed ability to receive and integrate all stripes of people.

And, because seemingly it needs to be said, Spanish speakers aren't the only ones affected.
