Her reply could also have meant that she did not understand Spanish, hence telling it to someone who cares would mean someone who understands it. It probably shows how unfamiliar I am with this part of American culture that I had no idea how this could be seen as racist.

Latino-Americans are in a catch 22 in this society in that the overall cultural mentality seems to be "tell it to someone who cares." Oddly enough, America is one of the few countries without an officially recognized language, yet those who do not speak the language the constitution was written in are largely held back and with suspicion.
