Another factor in specifically Mexican refusal to assimilate is history.
Every Mexican knows that a century and half ago the border was considerably more northernly than now, granting Mexico basically what today is the Southwest and Texas.
Many Mexicans living in the USA use as a pretext not to assimilate the fact (interpretation if you will, whatever; irrelevant to my point here) that they are in territory "the USA stole from Mexico" so they're not really in foreign lands.
