The toddler girl, Terra, is still learning about the physical world. Apparently she decided that the door was quite interesting. Perhaps the door was different than the ones she has at home. For instance, perhaps it is heavier, or has a self-closing mechanism. So, she may have been doing a scientific experiment: does the door close by itself every time? Wow! it does! This is neat!

As for shaking her head, well, the idea of a nod meaning yes and a shake meaning no is a cultural thing. Although now quite widespread, it is not universal nor instinctual. So, apparently Terra is not completely up to date on that either.

Also, when their parents are there is the best time to talk to little girls. They won't feel that you're going behind their back, and will probably have a better opinion of you. Obviously, don't overdo it, but no need to be quite so skittish.

Sounds like you met a couple nice girls.
