I'd bet she'd love to be engaged an adult in a conversation. Next time you all are together, you could talk to her about school, or other benign subjects like that.

If you are only engaging the other adults and the toddler, the 12yo may feel left out, unimportant, alienated. You know what i mean?

So, try talking to her and see how it goes.
