Brain needs it. Diet might include enough of it, but he may have other dietary intake that binds it and prevents absorption... Makes people moody and less likely to deal with stress appropriately... leading to elevated adrenaline, which leads to lowered iron absorption... vicious cycle.

Drinking soda could play a role in that. Soda contains phosphoric acid, a chemical used in the metal industry to bind and remove rust from iron. Mostly, grabs the iron particles and strips the oxygen... heh, me trying to give JD a bio chem lesson... lol!

Maybe he needs more sunlight on his skin. Increasing his serotonin levels would certainly help; the tryptophan and tyrosine are a great start on that. Maybe you should instruct him on bettering his iron intake, too.
