Don't overthink it. You got a smile from a pretty girl. Does it mean she thought she'd found her soulmate? Probably not. She was at a mall, so she was probably 'boywatching', and maybe you got 'boywatched' yourself. It's possible. Girls are not immune from finding older 'boys' attractive, and even if she's heard the 'negative press' you mentioned, she may still have been curious about you.
