an informal GM with K

This past weekend I couldn’t interact with K. because her mother was selling food and she was helping her. After eating, I went to K to pay for the food even thought her mother was receiving the money. K was selling the drinks, so when she saw me, she asked me: Quieres una soda? that translated means Would you like a soda?

That’s it. That was all of the interaction that I had with K. So why do I make a big deal about it? You see, she used the Spanish word TU. In English this word means informal you. In my Latin culture children address adults using the formal you or USTED. Children use the informal you or TU to address their same age friends and peers and never an adult(well, in most cases).
Yet she used the informal you or TU to address me which really caught me by surprise and goes to show that she more or less see me as a friend, don’t you think?
