Since ordinary people cannot be trusted with other people's money, why do we want to give them more power when they work for the government?

Certainly people are self-centered and think of themselves first, but I have met many people from many cultures and a great many of those people will go well out of their way to help a stranger. As it is, Americans contribute a greater percentage of their personal income to charity than virtually any other developed nation. Government is simply an especially inefficient way to do so.
