But I started getting as antsy as a lab-rat whose lever-pressing produces nummies at completely random intervals. I can't say that I didn't soar the heights of dizzying love for my high-school sweetheart. But they were a function of the lows on the emotional roller-coaster created by her lack of autonomy.

You put most elegantly in words this experience. It sounds to be exactly the way I felt in a rather similar situation. The moments of nervous anticipation leading up to every meeting (and those that didn't materialize) are burned into my memory forever. It's been nice being off the roller-coaster for a while, but something deep within me wants the exhilaration of hitting those peaks again.
