I've not read any accompanying articles about this painting and so can only form an opinion from what I see. And to me, the girl herself looks a tad guilty and a little shamed. It would guess she's being doing some naughty no-no's with the guy and is now feeling a tinge of regret having been caught out.

Was she perhaps forced to give evidence against him, turning her lover into a convict?
