unintended but appropriate ...

Reading NFiH's post on the subject, I see that "phaeos" referred not just to gray, but specifically to a mixture of white and black, white and brown, etc.

If we think of those as the colors of individual hairs, mixing together to form gray, we have a happy coincidence: the word itself includes the concept of mixing two different qualities together, such as mixing young and old.

So perhaps this word is even more appropriate than I first thought.
