I meant to add something before posting -
I made the comment that the Scientific Community can be "just as harsh" as the church. Before you go there, I KNOW they don't burn people at the stake today (neither does the church). But they will relentlessly, almost gleefully, disparage and ridicule a dissident , both socially and professionally. If you read between the lines in many scientific journal refutations, they are saying "X is a complete idiot, I am superior, and X had better get his ass in line." This can be career ending.
