The problem

The problem is that we're stuck with a legacy called "The Constitution" which was an admirable attempt by a lot of smart people with good intentions to glue together thirteen separate and very different 'states' into one country. The result is the United States, and it barely qualifies as being one country. They did a half-assed job, but commendable anyway considering what they had to deal with at the time. Even numerous amendments since then haven't remedied the basic problem caused by the original refusal of the separate states to form one country. Where other countries can just do stuff like declare that they're not going to let their citizens die of treatable illnesses, such a declaraion is, as Baldur pointed out, unconstitutional here. You have to actually violate the constitution in order to get it done. Unfortunately, solving the problem is not as simple as Baldur (sarcastically) makes it sound, because there are too many people who worship the paper the constitution was written on.
May I suggest any further political discussion be taken to political forums devoted to the purpose, where you'll have any number of people to discuss it with, expressing any number of alternate viewpoints, with complete freedom to use your best arguments without fear of being recognised and linked to your posts on Girl Chat.
