I agree that most humans have an innate need to treat the dead (at least, the corpses of people they were close to) with respect.

On the other hand, there have been some groups where that respect required them to eat the dead; in some cases to acquire the best attributes of the dead person, in other cases so that the dead person would always be with them.

I'm not big on cannibalism myself, and there are some notable problems with things like transmission of disease (see link below), but it should be clear that the prohibition on cannibalism is not a self-evident absolute.
