This is just rationalising. Of course there is no reason for treating a corpse as any different than any other piece of meat and religion might play a part for some but we as humans provide meaning to our lives which is not inherently there. For some of us this does carry on to treat the body of a dead person with some kind of respect that we tried to show them in life. I agree there is no logical reason, I mean we BURN many bodies these days so how is that seen as respect, but we CHOOSE to treat them humanely since it is us the living that matter not the dead corpse. Often it is what affects us that matters just as much as how me treat non-living objects. I doubt many animal species know about religion but it seems some do recognise death and treat the dead with similar respect. Ape species in particular do seem quite affected by the death of those close to them amongst other species.
