As we know, mostly history is written by the survivors and those in a position to publish.
Translation: history is mostly written by the victors, or at least those representing the dominant ideology of the time. And during the 1950s and '60s, the dominant ideology of the time did not accept homosexuality as morally neutral, just as the dominant ideology of today feels the same way about pedophilia and hebephilia, the latter of which it conflates with the former in most cases.
Remember, most of humanity was illiterate and did not have access to a large amount of factual news so did rely on what they were given by those in power.
Something people continue to do to this day almost to the same extent as they did in the past, despite being largely literate and having access to an incredible amount of information in contrast to their counterparts in the past--because that info is vetted and filtered by the private owners of the media, who represent the dominant ideology of the time. This hardly makes the info we receive entirely factual and without bias. The Internet web hosting sites and blogosphere is also dominated by private owners who routinely censor sites and blogs that espouse unpopular ideas, with fora like GC barely able to survive thanks to us owning our own server, which is a difficult measure, as we have been under assault by the censor-mongers many times in the past despite doing our own hosting (you weren't here for the Verizon incident some years ago). How often have you ever heard any view other than the mainstream view about pedophilia and hebephilia before you discovered the MAP boards, despite being literate and having access to the vast information database that is the Internet?
I'll agree things have changed remarkably, especially with the advent of the Internet, but even here we tend to have a muddying of the waters since every Tom, Dick and Harry can publish so it often is down to who shouts the loudest who gets the attention.
And, equally as often, who says the most popular and politically correct things, thus getting flagged by irate readers far less often than those who say otherwise?
Although many more different viewpoints are available now the basic abilities of the population to discriminate has not got any better.
Full agreement here, my newest pal.
