Specific facts may not always be verifiable, but particular era-specific ubiquitous trends, attitudes, and values that are clearly caught and explicated on film or in the literature of the time are often not in question, as the PSA, documentary, and various tomes I linked and mentioned make clear.

As we know, mostly history is written by the survivors and those in a position to publish. Remember, most of humanity was illiterate and did not have access to a large amount of factual news so did rely on what they were given by those in power. I'll agree things have changed remarkably, especially with the advent of the Internet, but even here we tend to have a muddying of the waters since every Tom, Dick and Harry can publish so it often is down to who shouts the loudest who gets the attention. Although many more different viewpoints are available now the basic abilities of the population to discriminate has not got any better.
