If the goal is to create awareness of the product and the brand, it does just that.
In the old days you had to go to the market to hear folks hawking their wares. There were also the itinerant peddlers too. But essentially, only where a purchase was expected was anyone pitching the goods.
Broadcast adverts mean that those who cannot afford to go to market, or who are in a community without means are being bombarded with information about what they cannot afford. Even without magical powers attributed to adverts I think that this has an effect. And as pro-Capitalism as I am; I think that Dissident could probably speak best about the effects of selling Gucci to the ghetto.
