It was aimed at griffith, who obviously has a huge hangup about America and it's successes. Not that I'm always happy with my country's actions, but saying "Good riddance" about an American astronaut (not to mention the countless other snipes he's made at America) just makes it clear he is bitter about the failures of his own country. I'm not particularly patriotic in general, but people like griffith, who constantly insult even the good things about America, push me in that direction.
