Don't you think that at least some of that alienation derives from our system of age-based apartheid?

I'm sure it does but some things are 'apartheid' by nature - such as not allowing pre-pubescents to have an equal vote as adults do since we presume them to not have anything like the knowledge and understanding of, hopefully, most adults. Perhaps one day we will see such children, when they can demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding, to have some kind of voting rights. Perhaps adult voters should also be tested to demonstrate they are adequately prepared to vote.
