I believe the majority of the public (not to mention a great many professionals) believe that ALL pedophiles molest children sooner or later. Until recently, ATSA (influential organization of professionals) had on its website roughly, "While all pedophiles are child molesters, not all child molesters are pedophiles."
But we can resist the temptation to abuse children sexually, and many of us present no danger to children whatsoever.
To that reader, we present the shocking idea that we can ALL resist this temptation. And what's more, some present NO DANGER. Two groups here, those who are in danger of molesting and those who are not in danger. Pro-contact pedophiles of course think that relationships with willing children are not abuse, but the public doesn't think that at all (and I'm against such relationships). In any case, it wouldn't be a discussion there would be any point in raising early on.
treated with sympathy and respect
You object to "treated" here. That's just an allegation based on a word that has two meanings. "Treated" here has nothing to do with therapy.
(Gay activist: "We deserve to be treated with dignity and respect." Alice: "Aha! You're saying gay people need psychiatric treatment!" Hardly.)
Think how many cases of abuse would be avoided...
That's group 1.
to non-offending pedophiles themselves. Many are depressed, and even suicidal, because of sexual thoughts that they didn’t choose but are able to successfully resist.
That's group 2. Do I want to emphasize again that some of us are not only able to resist but have no trouble at all? I've already said some present no danger. The heads of typical readers are still reeling, suspending their disbelief that we exist AT ALL!
would you want your child to be treated with sympathy and respect, to have access to help so your child could live a happy, productive and law-abiding life?
Many pedophiles do suffer enormously. We're never saying they need conversion therapy. But they could really use a place to talk about their feelings, the hatred they endure, the need to keep a secret, etc. Some do need help not acting inappropriately.
if some refuse to take the medicine...
That is entirely your projection.
I have nothing to feel guilty about and I am not ashamed of anything I feel. I have no conflict within myself or any difficulty keeping within the law, nor do I objectively fufill the criteria of paedophilia as set out in DSM.
Me too. But I don't see any need to emphasize this to an audience who is still gasping in disbelief at the idea that ANY pedophiles don't abuse children.
Remember how we got onto this topic: You quoted Tom O'Carroll's commenter, The VirPed philisophy is one of total acceptance of the authorities’ disgust of minor attraction and I can never go along with that. I’m not sure how they live with such open self-loathing.
and added yourself, Never visited the forum at VP, but that was my impression of the main VP site.
I was offering you a chance to see for yourself. Not to wave the flag as a subscribing member.
I liken the pro-contact view as akin to expat Armenians marching at the height of the genocide against them by Turks to demand equal representation in all walks of life. And shushing critics by claiming that if they don't make that claim now, they are caving to pressure. No, at that moment, the vital question was how to avoid getting slaughtered.
In terms of self-loathing, we've done a couple polls among VP members. In the first one, we have 35 who said they would take a pill to make their pedophilia go away, and 18 who said they wouldn't -- the latter tend to predominate among the mods and frequent posters. (Wanting to take a pill to make it go away is not the same as self-loathing -- it sometimes just means they think life would be easier that way.)
We currently have open a poll with more refined answers to choose among. PBG means "Pedophilia-Be-Gone". Based on 51 replies so far, we have:
12% -- I would take a PBG pill regardless of any other factors below, and I think my attraction itself is morally bad or a cause for shame.
22% -- I would take a PBG pill regardless of any other factors below, though I don't think having the attraction is morally bad or a cause for shame.
16% -- I would take a PBG pill only if it would preserve the non-sexual understanding or affection for kids I have now that goes beyond what ordinary people feel.
6% -- I would take a PBG pill but only if it also gave me a full attraction to other adults.
12% -- I would not take a PBG pill, but I would take a "hots-for-adults" pill to give me a full attraction to other adults -- it would add an attraction and not take one away.
6% -- I wouldn't take any pills to change my sexual attractions, but I would hope that a newborn baby is not going to be a pedophile.
27% -- I wouldn't take any pills because attractions are part of making a person who he is.
I see about 12% there who might qualify for "self-loathing". Let's allow for some response bias and set a maximum of 24%. We don't want to belittle those suffering people, but help them from where they are to feel better and expose them gently to those of us who do not feel self-loathing.
