I'd have to see the quote. Nickerson is a passionate guy. Most of us don't use language precisely. But we're dealing with percentages, what "itching to" means, and what "rape" means, etc.

My premise is that pedophiles cover the same range as non-pedophiles on just about every characteristic, including psychopaths and those who will lie or take advantage of others to get sex. It's no surprise that when they do offend, pedophiles are more likely to offend against children, just like ordinary guys are more likely to offend against adults.

Whether it is a delusion is complicated, as the above might suggest. But in any case, when you are trying to change hearts and minds, it helps to start where people are. If people believe that most pedophiles rape children, then "Lots of us don't rape children" is both true and a step in the right direction. "We don't rape children at a rate higher than adults rape women" might be true, but the data isn't clear, and getting into a debate on the subject detracts from point one (for the intro course on pedophilia as opposed to the advanced course): "Lots of us don't rape children".
