This is a very important point:

The fact that you presumed otherwise says a lot about the narrative pushed by western media and just how strong it is: first that women in Islamic cultures are seldom given any choice

A variety of institutions in Islamic cultures (compared to Western cultures of Europe and the Anglosphere) create this impression in Westerners: the usage of body and face covering garments; the divergent rules for divorce for husbands and for wives; the existence of polygyny (even though it is no longer legal in many countries, and even where it is, it's rare); the traditionally high burden of proof for rape accusations; young marriage itself (not just marriage at 9 years of age -- even marriage at 18 seems early to contemporary Westerners for whom women "should" marry only after a college degree and a firm start to a work career); and so on. These and other small features of Islamic cultures which shape gender roles and expectations, combine to make, from the Western point of view, the impression of generalized abuse of females and entrenched male dominance. What is not seen, and is not transmitted, is that as always when there are more solid gender roles, both genders have greater responsibility to the other; males are not simply free to do anything. And both genders have complementary roles and powers in daily lives. The sort of authority and strength which is expected of the Islamic wife in her role as a wife is greater than what contemporary Western wives experience in their role as wives.

Generally, we should remember that different cultures work differently. Nothing is in isolation; each part works together with the other parts.
