abolishing the self

Perhaps everyone does things for purely selfish reasons.

But if the selfish reason is feeling good to help someone else, that itself can be a good thing.

And if we define "selfish" so broadly as to mean taking joy in others' happiness, does it really mean anything at all?

There are many who have sacrificed a great deal, even everything, to help others. Must they go to hell before we honor their sacrifice as selfless? And if so, what sort of monsters does that make us?
