I appreciate the apprehension about participating in research, particularly if people think researchers are biased, have ulterior motives, or are asking the wrong questions. It is clear to us that there is a lot of distrust between MAPs and researchers and that this is something that needs to be addressed. We think that one way to address this might be to engage MAPs in the research process in the future (from the types of questions we ask to the end results).
