We've been over the whole consent and harm-trade-off issue many times, so I see no point in adding anything. You're still wrong So you think. But I do not think so. ... Maybe I should say... My arguments are completely persuasive, Only on an emotional level. Not to anyone who is more concerned about evidence, logic, and the rules and precedents set by history. Or to those more loyal to civil libertarian principles than structures of authority they are accustomed to. you know they are, I know they are to people who are more easily swayed by emotion. But not to those who can rise above that in their thinking. and maintaining your view on the subject is just a lie -- a lie, I claim -- nay, even stronger, I KNOW! Very transparent attempt at using reverse psychology to rattle me, Ethan. Like I said, we're not as ignorant as you think :-D -- in order to avoid having to admit you are wrong and to maintain your status in this community. There, how's that? Ouch! You certainly gave ME a taste of my own medicine. Ouch, I say! :-D On voting age, you somehow left out of your reply that I had proposed lowering the voting age to zero, and then you talk about how I want to deny kids the right to vote. Does not compute. But then you made an argument as to why you think if the voting age was lowered it wouldn't ultimately matter in the scheme of things. Hadjak refuted that one effectively enough in his response. And I told you why it does matter in the scheme of things. My purpose in saying nothing would happen is not to deny them the vote (I just said I wanted to give them the vote, right?). It is to suggest that there are other things to focus on if you want to improve their lives -- it's a battle with a low payoff if you win. Suffrage is a first step towards many other important things. Because it opens the door for them to improve their lives on terms and with their active involvement, not to rely entirely on adults to decide what is best for them. I sketched out some of my ideas in another post earlier tonight. I didn't disagree with any of them, or think any of them were bad suggestions. I simply said they were not sufficient on their own to make a huge difference; only enough to take a bite out of the problems. |
