In reply to APA Declares Masculinity Toxic posted by Eeyore on Saturday, January 12 2019 at 02:37:17AM

Hi Eeyore,

If you've read the report as opposed to the reporting, you'll see it's quite even-keeled and compassionate toward the boys and men suffering from the expectations of the cultures they live in.

Consider that the masculine ideologies mentioned in the report, those 'toxic masculinities', are most damaging to guys who stray furthest from the ideal male. Us.

Each guideline has an explanation for its inclusion in the document and then a practical application section. Here's an excerpt I took from the application section of the first guideline:

'Psychologists are encouraged to expand their knowledge about diverse masculinities and to help boys and men, and those who have contact with them (e.g., parents, teachers, coaches, religious leaders, and other community figures), become aware of how masculinity is defined in the context of their life circumstances. Psychologists aspire to help boys and men over their lifetimes navigate restrictive definitions of masculinity'

So many of us suffer pointlessly for the fact we don't, can't, fit into the existing masculine roles in our communities. That's cause for exclusion from those communities, either externally in the sense of being clocked as nonconforming and rejected or internally as in those of us who are accepted by others under the assumption that our public behavior matches our private thoughts and feelings.

Imagine if this guideline was applied to people in our position. Imagine if we had the APA supporting the existence of a respectable identity for MAPs so that we could be free to live our lives without having to hide or suffer persecution.

P.S

The American Psychological Association isn't responsible for the content of the DSM if that's what you meant by their having the ability to decide which sexualities are acceptable. The identically abbreviated American Psychiatric Association is behind that one, and even in that case the official party line published in the manual isn't necessarily what is held to be true by the APA members. There's an interesting history behind the gradual removal of homosexuality from the DSM and it involves a relatively small group of radicals acting against the common understanding about the nature of homosexuality within the American psychiatric community.

The radio show This American Life recently re-aired an old episode on this topic and it's a fascinating thing to hear. That episode can be found here:

P.P.S

The current edition of the DSM actually doesn't list pedophilia as a disorder of any kind. Pedophilic attraction is still mentioned within the text, though one of three criteria for its diagnosis (lol) is that the person showing pedophilic attraction is distressed or has offended; an adult who desires sex with children is not considered disordered unless they meet this criteron.
This is obviously an unsatisfying halfway point between the science and the politics, though it's remarkably similar to the way homosexuality was classified by the APA prior to it being considered a legitimate sexual orientation.
