... for a second source.

And

exaggerated numbers, it forces people to go into moral panic mode

I have a true story that illustrates the problem:

One day, in an attempt at levity, I went to my boss and reported that we had a huge dihydrogen oxide leak near the hangar. I went on to explain that dihydrogen oxide is a chemical mixture of two highly explosive gases. In its mixed form, it is a liquid that can corrode solid steel and can kill humans within seconds if incorrectly exposed to it. In its solid form, in can rip apart solid steel and is responsible for many human deaths. The same goes for its powdered form. The amount measured in the thousands of gallons all over the tarmac near the hangar.

The boss went to the phone, saying he was going to call emergency services.

I laughed. He stopped, frowning. I then told him that dihydrogen oxide is the chemical name of water. It was raining.

Panic, anyone?
