How about NAS Miramar on an aircraft ramp so hot that my spongy rubber civvie shoes stuck to the concrete? Or Central Texas around Dallas? Or the pecan capital of the world in southern Georgia (the state, not the country.)

As for panhandlers, I refuse to donate to them (usually). Too many stories to justify such a response. However...

One day, wifey and I were walking downtown Toronto when this fellow came up and tried to panhandle. I just shook my head and we walked past. Yet he continued his script but in a very funny way. While I don't remember his repartee, I do clearly remember the smiles he brought to me from his clever joking. We continued to walk and he eventually gave up, looking for another prospect.

I suddenly turned around, walked back alone to him, scared him a bit because he wasn't expecting it, and I handed him a $10 bill. He looked in my eyes as I stared into his. "You earned it, buddy. That's not begging."
