At the very least this probably means that many more people have been infected than is currently known.

Famous or not, this is definitely true. How many "many" we will probably never know. But it's clear that symptoms range from deadly to so mild they can be confused with a common cold; and possibly some people would be entirely asymptomatic. So yes, true infections were, are, and will be, more than we are counting.
