Social attitudes towards non-offending pedophiles?

Have there been any studies on what people actually think of non-offending pedophiles, i.e. people who are sexually attracted to children but don't actually do it? Very often I hear about how pedophiles should be killed, tortured, etc, but I don't know if they're referring to child molesters or to people like myself.

A few months ago, some guy was burned to death in Britain just for taking pictures of kids (allegedly), which made him a pedophile in the eyes of some lumpen "vigilantes".

Would most people really be willing to hurt another person simply for their thoughts? What would happen if a man announced in a crowded street that he was a non offending pedophile. Would he be attacked? Or would probably nothing happen to him?
