Why try to avoid her? I'd smile back early and often. I've developed the habit of smiling at just about every kid I encounter, boy or girl (I enjoy boys, also). Often they ignore me, sometimes they smile back. I haven't (yet) had anyone freak out and go running back to their parents, or otherwise have a completely negative reaction.
