Her name was Emily. Five or six years old, long, wild brunette hair, beautiful brown eyes. Wearing a red T-shirt and a pair of bib overall-shorts and sandals. She came in with her dad.
I got started on what dad wanted done and had a free moment so I chatted with Emily for a bit. She was curious about what we do there so I told her. It turned out that there was a little thing I could make for her, I asked her if she wanted it and she said yes! After making sure it was okay with dad I went ahead. After much too short a time all was ready for them and they got ready to leave. Emily thanked me very nicely for what I had done. She looked me right in the eyes and gave me a big smile. I said she was welcome and I was happy to do it for her. She just kept looking at me and smiling, it seemed like forever! I actually started getting uncomfortable, I wanted to say more, anything, make a funny face or something, this moment went on and on! Finally dad was done talking to my co-worker and they left. And I had to go sit down for a while.
On my way to work today I'd been thinking happy thoughts about moving somewhere warmer, getting a job that would let me interact more with LGs. A nice fantasy and one that made the miles to work speed by. And then Emily came in and I was captivated.
And then she left, and I was sad.
I know this is a pattern for me, I can't seem to help it. I get a bit of interaction with a cute girl and I'm on cloud nine. And then later I get sad and/or angry. Sad that these glimpses of heaven are so short and so shallow, that to interact more than I do, at any level, could very well land me in prison.
Angry that I live in a time of unprecedented negativity towards Girl Love. That I can't express any feelings on any but the simplest level, can't have a special girl in my life, can't can't can't.
My co-worker, my one friend who knows the truth about me, came around to find me a little later. I vented to him a bit about how unfair the world is and he agreed. (He's got his own hairball to deal with right now, poor guy.) I was in a pissy mood for the rest of the day. But for once I shook myself by the scruff of the neck and I'm trying my hardest to look at this in a positive light.
Emily liked me. She only knew me for a few minutes, we didn't say much to each other. But I'm as sure of it as I am of anything in this world.
Emily liked me.
And while that's not nearly enough, it's enough for now.
