Hi All,

Even though I may not say too much these days, I want everyone to know that I still read regularly, and feel connected to Girl Chat, one of a very few web sites that is actually run by and for Girl Lovers.

To our North American posters, I wish each and everyone of you very Merry Christmas. May Santa be good to you this year and bless you with many little one with whom to share your love. To those in Europe, I wish a Happy Yule and a visit from Father Christmas. May this venerable old gentleman leave you the gift of love. To those in Latin Countries, Feliz Navidad. May the warmth of the holiday spread over you like kisses on the cheek from a little angel. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't wish our Jewish friends a wonderful Hannukah. And finally, to anyone whose homeland or holiday custom I may have missed, may you have a very happy and joyous holiday as well.

Has anyone noticed that Christmas is not truly a Christian holiday? The bringing of greens, such as evergreen trees, wreaths, holly and mistletoe into the home around the winter solstice, is an ancient pagan custom imported to America (and other places) from Europe. Santa Claus, a form of the Dutch Sinterklaas (which itself is a form of Saint Nicholas - try saying St. Nicholas fast several times and you have Sinterklass), at least in the U.S., is largely a creation of the Coca Cola company, aided by the greeting card, and wrapping paper industries.

The entire holiday seems to revolve around the buying, wrapping, and exchanging of gifts, freshly bought, wrapped, and labeled, from stores, large and small. Remember when Bill Clinton's campaign used the phrase, "It's the economy stupid."? I think this also applies to Christmas in our modern day and age. To be honest, this gift exchange is my least favorite part of the winter solstice holiday. I often refer to this practice as "Social Extortion", only half kidding. The baby Jesus seems to be thrown into the holiday named for him, as almost an after thought. Nowadays, it's Rudolph, Santa, and Grandma getting run over by reindeer:)

Despite it all, this holiday can mean anything we want it to. For me, it's all about the children, and those who love them. So once again, may all you Child Lovers (and the children we love) have a happy and joyous holiday. And, may the new year be filled with many positive and loving GM's for all.

Love,
28
