Ups and downs - a GM

Actually, I feel really down about this event, and Im posting here because you guys are the only ones in the world who would understand and possibly sympathize. The first part of this story -- the good part -- actually occurred last year.
So its summertime now. And you know what that means? Its VBS (Vacation Bible School) time. I know most of you guys arent religious, but let me assure you that there are so many opportunities to meet little girls at church events. I volunteered to help at the VBS at my church. I knew I was a girl-lover, but at this point in my life, I really didnt want to deal with the stress of continuous PR -- defending my relationships with the little girls and trying to get situations where I could befriend the parents so that they would be more likely to appreciate my relationship with their daughters, trying to make these relationships seem natural to others. And so, I was really kind of aloof. I was there among a hundred children, but I tried to keep my distance, not really talk with them much or befriend them. I was there to work, nothing more.
This worked for the first several days of the week. But by Thursday, this one girl decided to take a liking to me. Now let me tell you, this girl is one of the hottest, sexiest little girls Ive ever seen. She was nine years old, and lets just say she knew how to dress. She was quite fashionable and wore cute clothes that exposed just the right amount of skin. So even from day 1, she definitely caught my eye. But I was keeping my distance. But despite my best intentions, a relationship was bound to happen. It was the fact that she kept coming up to me, talking to me, all the time. It was the huge smile she got on her face whenever she saw me. It was the excitement with which she would wave to me when she arrived. It was the hugs she gave me. It was the glint in her eyes. It was the Hello, Chai with which she greeted me with her cute voice. It was the fact she would grab my arm and pull me along with her wherever she went. It was that she wanted to be next to me the entire time. It was when she slipped her hand into mine and held it every chance she got. Can you stay with me forever? she would ask. If only I could.
Ive never had a girl take such a strong interest in me when I did absolutely nothing to engender a relationship. I hadnt even talked to her for the first few days. She just decided to like me.
Alas, VBS was soon over, and I figured I would never see her again. She didnt go to my church, and I knew little about her. There was no way I could engineer another meeting between us, so unless we saw each other perchance, I wouldnt see her again. But in many ways, I didnt care. I had a moment of joy, a week of euphoria. Its the little moments that bring me happiness that keep me going. I just enjoy the moments that are given to me.
So a year passes. Memories of this girl cross my mind occasionally, but I regard them as simply recollections of times past. And then this past Saturday, wonder of all wonders, I see her again. And wow, has she grown into a damn fine young lady. Shes ten now. And if I though she was hot last year, its nothing to what she looks like this year. And she still knows how to dress to impress. Nicely made-up hair. Super short little shorts. A tank top. A cute bra. She doesnt even have boobs yet at all, but she still wore a bra. I kind of thought it made her look even hotter, though.
And best of all, she still liked me as much as ever. For the entire hour I was able to spend with her this weekend, she was talking with me, and hanging all over me. I could describe her in excruciating detail, but I dont want to make you guys too jealous.
They were just about to leave, and I was trying to figure out a way we could see each other again. As we were finishing our conversation, she said her birthday was in a weeks and she asked me what I was going to get her for her birthday. Well, I didnt have to think too hard over what I *really* wanted to get her. I asked her if she had ever been to the amusement park that is in my city. She said no. So I asked her, Would you be at all interested in going? If you want, I could take you there for your birthday?
Now let me just say first of all that I knew that chances of that actually happening were extraordinarily low. I mean, which parent in this society would actually let their 10-year-old daughter go with a guy she doesnt know all that well? But hey, if I dont ask at all, the chances are zero. If I ask, maybe at least Ill hit that one-in-a-million chance. And this girls mom was pretty cool. I had talked with her earlier in the day for a while. Maybe I could work something out.
So after I asked this girl if she wanted to do this, she got all excited and had another huge smile on her face. She turned to her mom and asked expectantly, He wants to take me to the amusement park. Can I do that, PLEASE?!?
It was the moment of truth. Alas, her mom said, Hmm, I dont know about that... I was just about to jump in and invite their whole family, and any friends too. This wasnt supposed to be just me and her. It was supposed to be a birthday celebration, replete with friends and family.
But just as I was about to do this, the moms friend piped in, I think shes a little young to be going out on dates.
Um, not the answer I was expecting. And that kind of killed the conversation. And killed any chance Id have to ever see her again. Looking back, I keep thinking of how much I would have done differently. I didnt exactly get to ask the parents under the best of circumstances. But they were about to leave, and I had to get my question in. It was either then or never.
I just hope I didnt scare the mom into thinking I was some kind of creep. I hope she doesnt go home and instill into her daughter a fear of all older guys because were all out there to get her.
Anyway, it definitely did not go as I had expected. But it was good to see this girl again, even if for a very brief period of time.
