Food is cheaper today, you say? Only if you live on an entirely different planet than I do. Speaking as a poor person who shops regularly, I can personally attest to the fact that food is NOT cheap, even if you have foodstamps, and the government frequently proposes passing limits on what foodstamps can purchase (some justified IMO, and some most certainly not justified IMO). Food is certainly far easier to produce today under modern productive methods, but it most certainly is not cheap to purchase. If you know a place where food is actually cheap, then please let me know where it is, because I would like to move there.

I am putting words in his mouth, but what I understand Lateralus to have said is that food is cheaper in equivalence of value AND quantity. If there is not enough food to feed a whole population, then the price of food is infinite, or at least above the whole value of the populations' income. The fact that today we can feed the whole of the world's population automatically means that food is cheaper now than it was before we were capable of that. Even if it is not evidently cheaper at the place of purchase.

That is how I understood his words.
